Snowboarding in Le Grand-Bornand…

So as you can probably see from the title… Yes i did manage to get away again this year, it was something that i’d wanted to do since first starting snowboarding, to quench that need that 1 week a year just doesn’t satisfy… albeit i only actually managed 2.5 days but that was enough to tide me over…

For this little getaway, a spur of the moment decision… (good dumping of snow the previous weekend being a decider) we choose to book things separately rather than as a package this time as we were limited on the number of days off… and this probably turned out to be the better option by happy coincidence.

As we tried to go for a cheaper break we looked for a different resort, and not go for the typical big resort as we have done a few and wanted something different… Looking for weekend breaks i came across “Le Grand-Bornand” this was a smaller resort not too far away from Chamonix, and about 45mins away from the airport in Geneva. -this made transfers a lot quicker especially as we choose to hire a car to make the trip (original thought was to drive down from the U.K) Next job was to book some accommodation in the area, we choose this hotel = http://www.hotel-pointe-percee.com/ the reviews from trip advisor not being bad and it being fairly cheap for 4 nights.

The only main expense for the trip, were the flights from easyjet; whilst they were the cheapest of all the airlines, due to booking late (no such thing as last minute these days…) it ended up costing around £400 for two return flights plus baggage.

The resort itself was perfect for a short weekend break, even though some of the lower runs were closed, This did mean you had to take a bubble at the end of the day as there wasn’t enough snow to make it all the way down. But the runs generally were in pretty good condition, with a good variety of runs and difficulty… oh and probably the most fun i’ve had off piste with long fairly shallow un-touched powder runs…

Piste Map Large Grand-BornandIn the mornings it was best to head to the back of the resort that was getting the first of the sunlight (left on the Piste Map), as by the afternoon this had become a little slow and slushy… getting there was not much fun as it was hard packed ice with not much bite.. not fun for the first run of the day.

Here are some shots from the trip…

If you have any comments i’d be glad to hear them, and also any other suggestions for trips…
