Getting Started

Those of you that have followed this series of blog posts from the “about me” page then onto “Setting the Scene”, you now find yourself in the last section… “Getting Started” This post is basically a follow on from the last part of “Setting the Scene”, where that post detailed the steps that got me into starting an online business and aiming for that millionaire’s lifestyle… of freedom and a passive income… this post charts my initial steps and ideas to what things I did to get me on the journey.

The Getting…

So…, you want to see how easy it is to duplicate some of the ideas from a friends porn site and make one yourself… how and where do you start? This was the question I had to ask myself, normally seeing as it was a friend that had a similar site, you would ask how he did it; I didn’t do this for two reasons, 1) I wanted to figure this out for myself, as he had done, and gain all that useful knowledge. 2) I’m not sure he’d be keen that I was going after a share of his business, albeit a very small share, and although I’m not doing this to directly compete, as I just want to create some initial capital to invest in other projects, and starting a porn site seemed to me the best way to do this with as little as possible upfront investment.
I knew that this is wasn’t a particularly niche way of doing things, as it’s a particularly saturated market but a) it works, millions of people watch porn every day. b) I’m not trying to make millions from it, and be the next big thing; I just want to boost my current monthly income, to help develop my more niche projects.

The Research…

This left me with a lot of Googling and a whole lot more reading and research to be done.
Seeing as at the time of starting this I knew nothing about making a website let alone a porn site, although I had a lot of experience of various porn sites… (Of course, this is only from rebuilding friends laptops riddled with malware due to too much porn… 😉
The research is something I enjoy, I love coming up against a problem and figuring the best way to fix or work around it, pulling various info from different sources and bringing it together for a fix. –I’ve always likened it to reading two fictional books and making a single story from them… so, the research; I spent hours reading all about various tube scripts and comparing them, as I was sticking with the bare minimal initial cost to make this work, I had written off building one from scratch, because this would take too long being in development, and costing more than it would to adapt an off the shelf script. Once the backend was sorted, this left me wondering about the frontend, the script I had chosen had a standard template for the front end… not something I wanted, but the script was bought on the premise that it could be replaced fairly easily; so despite wanting to keep costs down, I didn’t want a standard template as it wouldn’t be very appealing and not stand out from the crowd…

Finally some doing…

As well as looking at a lot of porn sites to get a feeling for what I felt made up a good site; being a bloke I obviously know what appeals content wise! After finding a suitable script that met the basic requirements and being pretty handy with Photoshop, I started wire framing a basic site, this led to designing a complete site to save money and to make sure my site looked different… This was another part of the process I enjoyed, as I found it very useful to help me learn the structure of the site, as well as get a better understanding of what was possible in regards to converting this PSD to a CSS coded page.
For those of you that don’t want to read about any porn associated bits I thought it would be better to explain all the steps and the journey for this first site in a more detailed on going post here…

Making Money with Porn…

A Fork in the Road…

It was during all this research and with the creative juices flowing that I started to think up other enterprising ideas, ideas that I thought would be slightly more long term, at about the same time I was scouring the web for ways in which to make the site work and be successful, I had heard of back linking and it’s dark art, during research on this and other marketing info I came across a great deal of blog posts on the topic, but most of these posts were to do with other forms of passive income sites, most notably blogs about how to make a living online. Hooked! is what I was, this launched a completely different set of tasks and ideas for me, as I began to wonder whether creating a blog to run alongside my online exploits, to promote and help generate good links to my online sites? (Obviously as you are reading this I concluded it would be!)
I began to read these blogs about passive income, how to make money online with your ideas, with google literally throwing thousands of sites at you to read and digest… this constant search for useful information eventually lead me to begin reading Tim Ferriss’s 4 Hour work week I was enthralled with this book so much so that I also got the audio book to listen in the car too! (I have 2 hour round trip, and this was me multitasking!) I have since lost count the amount of times I have read or listened to the “4 hour work week”. Although not everything in the book is or will be applicable to you, the amount of principles and examples of work that you can take away from are extremely useful, I sometimes just put the audio book on when I am lacking a bit of motivation for a little boost.
No knowing what made for useful info I sought out other books and blogs of a similar nature for reference or inspiration, another useful book is the $100 Start-Up by Chris Guillebeau; and google searches for similar sites can be found in the thousands, some of them useful (which I hope this site will be) and others not that comprehensive but having good sections of info. One of my personal favourites is run by Pat Flynn at the smartpassiveincome.com, I regularly check this site and have modelled a fair of my site on it, because it’s that good! If anybody can properly demonstrate that with hard work and determination you can make it work; and no, success does not come overnight!

The Starting…

And so, with all this reading and procrastinating it led to the creation of this blog as a way not only to generate additional income, but to serve as a platform to promote my projects and work, and ultimately a grown-up journal of my personal experiences and exploits.
this site will detail the how and what of projects I attempt, down to what I got upto during the month…

As ever your feedback and comments are very much appreciated, to give me inspiration and help me where I’m going wrong….

Thanks for reading and please check out the rest of the site..!
